Why Celebrex Arthritis Medication is Prescribed?

Celebrex (celecoxib) is medication that can treat the pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex belongs to a class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known as COX-2 inhibitors. Celebrex and other COX-2 inhibitors are effective in treating pain and inflammation but are less likely to cause serious stomach side effects (stomach ulcers and bleeding, for example) than other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen (Naprosyn).

Celebrex arthritis medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or Celebrex pharmacist for more Celebrex information.

How should Celebrex Arthritis Medication be Used?

Celebrex (celecoxib) comes as a capsule to take by mouth. Celebrex is usually taken once or twice a day. Follow the Celebrex directions on your Celebrex prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or Celebrex pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Celebrex/celecoxib exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of Celebrex or take Celebrex more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Celebrex Precautions

Before taking Celebrex/celecoxib,tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Celebrex/celecoxib, aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, sulfas, or any other drugs.

Do not take aspirin or acetaminophen when using Celebrex/celecoxib unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver, heart, or kidney disease; high blood pressure; asthma; any stomach problems including ulcers or bleeding; or any other gastrointestinal disease.

What are Celebrex Side Effects?

Although Celebrex side effects from Celebrex/celecoxib are not common, they can occur. Common Celebrex side effects are nausea, diarrhea, heartburn and still include upset stomach and stomach pain. In rare cases, Celebrex side effects may cause stomach ulcers or stomach bleeding. Using the lowest effective dose for only as long as you have pain may lower your risk of these side effects.

You should not take Celebrex if you have an allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Nor should you take it if you have allergies to sulfa medications, such as co-trimoxazole (Bactrim). People with kidney disease or a history of ulcers may be more likely to experience Celebrex side effects.
